SKU: 3031071150 days — 'Provider' is high yielding with plants that have a strong, upright growth habit and pods that are five to six inches long, round in cross section, smooth, and medium-green in color. The seeds are purple. Resistant to bean common mosaic virus (BCMV), Pod Mottle Virus, and some races of rust.
'Provider' was bred and released by the USDA Vegetable Breeding Laboratory at Charleston, South Carolina in 1966. It has a complex parentage that includes 'Valentine', 'Logan', 'Ashley Wax', 'Asgrow St. Greenpod' and 'Commodore'. Each ounce is approximately 80 seeds.
These bush beans did great. We have had a good yield and they stood up to our hot fall weather.
My main reason for preferring Provider beans is the rich flavor. There is simply no comparison to the tasteless beans sold in grocery-store produce departments. Admittedly some other home-grown varieties (like my second favorite, Jade) are also good, but I've found none better than Provider. Also, I've never seen any significant beetle damage on Provider plants. One year we actually had a row of Providers just across the aisle from some trellised green beans. The beetles were chowing down on the viney plants, then they'd fly over and rest awhile on the Providers before going back.
This bean is the winner for me. Good germination, plants were healthy and it really lived up to its name in providing us with tons of beans. We wanted a good bean for dilly beans and this one is it.
