Sowing Strawflower Seeds Indoors: Start by sowing strawflower seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost. Plant the seeds thinly and cover them lightly with seed starting mix, as they need light to germinate. Keep the soil moist, and expect seedlings to emerge in 7-10 days. Once they sprout, provide plenty of light from a sunny window or fluorescent grow lights, turning them on for 16 hours daily. Transplant seedlings to larger pots when they have two pairs of true leaves and harden them off by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions for a week before moving them outside.
Sowing Directly in the Garden: For direct sowing, wait until after the last frost and choose a sunny location with well-drained soil. Prepare the garden bed by removing weeds and incorporating organic matter, such as compost, into the top 6-8 inches of soil. Sow the seeds evenly and barely cover them with fine soil, keeping it moist. Seedlings should emerge in 7-10 days; thin them to stand about 12 inches apart once they reach 2 inches in height.
