Sunflower, Giant Greystripe
Price: $2.95
SKU: 1000111Planting Instructions: Sunflowers are very easy to grow and because of their size, quite spectacular for a childโs garden.
Sow directly outdoors, ยพ inches deep. Thin the plants at first to 8 inches and then to two feet to avoid crowding. (We have had good luck transplanting)
Water regularly and weed between the plants to eliminate competition.
Harvest the seeds by cutting the flowering heads when the backs have turned yellow. Complete the drying by hanging them upside down in a warm, dry place.

Every single one of these I planted sprouted strongly and grew immediately. They are currently about 9 feet tall average and have large, wide heads full of broad seeds. They stayed strong through wind storms and wasps trying to build a nest inside one of them. Their performance this year makes me want to plant an entire field full of them!

Yes, these will grow as advertised! Ours grow 10-12 feet tall. The bigger flowers get 12-14" in diameter. Our beagle loves being in the forest of these plants and each summer they are covered with wild honey bees. The stems get big enough that if cut you could use them as a baseball bat. Make sure these are put in the back of the garden because they will make a lot of shade as tall as they grow.

They grew very tall and think, and we harvested most heads and then broke them apart to dry them out quickly. We had a lovely harvest.

Perfect germ, of course, indifferent to weather (while growing), no pest or disease (while growing) problems at all (even the deer won't touch them). Far larger than advertised; 10-11 ft and nicely uniform, stalks more like trunks, very large heads. Once they start to ripen, however, they seem to be prone to mold and rot; I don't remember applying any Bordeaux to them, so that might be my fault (they were going so well on their own!) Despite losses, I still have an impressive harvest and will be planting them again (and paying more attention to them).

They grew over 10 feet tall. Half of the flowers produced a beautiful white seed and the other half produced grey striped seeds. Tasty seeds. The bugs loved them as well as the birds and the humans. =)
