Rattlesnake Pole Green Garden Bean

SKU: 30302311Some folks say that this old heirloom variety was named after the characteristic way that their pods twist and snake around the vines and poles. Another theory is that the speckled brown and tan seed coloration resembles that of a rattler. In some parts of the Southern United States it is called 'Preacher' bean. Each ounce is approximately 95 seeds.
Don’t bother trying to get an early start with beans – you’ll waste a lot of seed! Beans are a tender vegetable and you should not plant them until all danger of frost has passed and the soil remains above 65ºF. Sow seeds 1½ inches deep, every two to three inches. As they make efficient use of vertical space, provide a trellis. Use string or twine as wire will heat and burn the tender vines.
Pick the pods while young as they are more tender and succulent and less likely to be stringy. For seed saving, allow the pods to fully mature and dry completely out on the vines.

These plants grow quickly, through drought and 100F+ Texas heat, and produced prolifically for a month. I have never tasted better beans! I ate them all green and fresh, although I hear they're good dried too.

I've had great success with these beans that I've grown for several years now. They've been productive despite our generally hot and dry weather. This year I planted some yellow (Golden Gate) and green (Northeaster) Romano-type beans in addition to these 'Rattlesnake' beans from Victory Seeds.
None of the Northeaster beans germinated and only one Golden Gate bean germinated. Just a single bean. I replanted those teepees with [Victory Seeds] 'Rattlesnake' beans and they're already coming up within a couple of days! Sometimes we put young 'Rattlesnake' beans raw in our salads and they are great canned or frozen. Sometimes they stop producing during the hottest weather, but start right up again once it cools off a bit.

Excellent, excellent taste; very prolific ... for small garden, suggest you start beans under light and then put in garden ... loopers are hard on them when just started. You must order by mail; never found them in a garden center. Charlie
