Southern Pea (Cowpea)
60 days — 'Quickpick Pinkeye' is a pinkeye purplehull type variety but its plant growing habit is quite different. The plants are determinate, erect, compact (reach about twenty inches), and non-vining. Because its pods are borne on the tops of the plants, its compactness, as well as its early maturity, "Quickpick" is an appropriate name for this variety. The pods are dark-purple and about seven to eight inches long containing nine to eleven, kidney-shaped seeds with large, maroon colored eyes. Both pods and peas tend to be slightly larger than other standard purplehull varieties.Southern Pea (Cowpea)
'Quickpick Pinkeye' is resistant to Cowpea Blackeye Mosaic Virus and was bred at the Louisiana Agricultural Experiment Station. Introduced in 1997, PVP was awarded in 2001 and expired in February of 2021. Each ounce is approximately 150 seeds.
Planting Instructions:
Loosen the soil in a location that receives at least 6 to 8 hours of full sunlight per day. Add compost or fertilizer before planting and not after.
Sow seeds directly outdoors as soon as soil temperatures reach 70F. Optimal germination occurs between 75 to 95F. Plant ½ to one inch deep, 1 to 2 seeds every two inches. Keep moist until germination. Thin to one plant every 3 to 6 inches in rows spaced 24 to 36 inches apart. Irrigation is normally not necessary as they are renowned for their ability to grow under harsh conditions. For improved germination of hard seed, soak in warm water for four hours just prior to sowing.
