Provider Garden Bean
Price: $3.40
SKU: 30310711'Provider' was bred and released by the USDA Vegetable Breeding Laboratory at Charleston, South Carolina in 1966. It has a complex parentage that includes 'Valentine', 'Logan', 'Ashley Wax', 'Asgrow St. Greenpod' and 'Commodore'.
Beans prefer well-drained, rich soil in a sunny location. Make sure you keep them well watered in the summer heat.
Beans are a tender vegetable and you should not plant them until all danger of frost has passed and the soil remains above 65ยบF. Sow seeds 1-1ยฝ inches deep, every two to three inches. Bush-type beans do not require support.
For seed saving, allow pods to remain on the plant until they are brittle and open easily. However, if you live in an area with a short growing season, harvest as close to dry as possible and finish drying indoors. Rain and freezing temps will damage beans.

Fantastic flavor, no imperfections, nice length, healthy plants, disease free. What a pleasure to grow! I'm including my recipe for cooking. 1 Tbsp garlic, 2 Tbsp butter, 1 cup of chicken broth and beans. Cover and cook until tender. Add salt after cooking. (Easy!)

These bush beans did great. We have had a good yield and they stood up to our hot fall weather.

My main reason for preferring Provider beans is the rich flavor. There is simply no comparison to the tasteless beans sold in grocery-store produce departments. Admittedly some other home-grown varieties (like my second favorite, Jade) are also good, but I've found none better than Provider.
Also, I've never seen any significant beetle damage on Provider plants. One year we actually had a row of Providers just across the aisle from some trellised green beans. The beetles were chowing down on the viney plants, then they'd fly over and rest awhile on the Providers before going back.

This bean is the winner for me. Good germination, plants were healthy and it really lived up to its name in providing us with tons of beans. We wanted a good bean for dilly beans and this one is it.
