SKU: 3250081100 days — A very old variety. It has been dropped from most commercial catalogs, is rare and seems to be near extinction. The fruit weigh an average of twelve pounds, are twelve to sixteen inches in length, and are elliptical or football-shaped.
Originally sent to us by our friend and fellow biodiversity preservationist, David Pendergrass from Middle Tennessee who wrote, "My personal favorite muskmelon. They must be picked at the peak of ripeness, when the fruit has turned a golden-yellow and they easily slip from the vine. They should be dead ripe for the best taste. They do not keep very long. Sweet aroma that will carry over a long distance. Definitely not a shipping melon." To be clear, this is a garden-to-table melon and does not ship well. Each packet contains one gram, which is approximately 25 seeds.

Planting Instructions:
The seeds can be directly sown in spring after the soil has warmed or started indoors three to four weeks before your last expected frost.
Indoors, plant two to three seeds per pot, ½ inch deep, thinning to best plant. Do not disturb roots. Outdoors, plant six to eight seeds, ½ inch deep, in hills spaced four feet apart. Transplant or thin to three plants per hill.
Young plants are cold sensitive and some cover protection at nights may be required. Mulch or cultivate to control weeds.

I saw this unusual melon and took a gamble. When picked ripe its the smoothest and sweetest thing ever, large enough that one can feed a four person family. All around it was a real hit! Found the tug-test (gently pulling on the vine) for ripeness to be misleading, some were well-attached but just right when picked.
