Livingston's Yellow Oxheart Tomato

Solanum lycopersicum

Price: $3.95

SKU: 3402731

90 days, indeterminate - Typical of heart-shaped varieties, the plants of 'Yellow Oxheart' tend to be sprawling if not tied up and have wispy leaves. As its name implies, 'Yellow Oxheart' fruit are oxheart-shaped and a beautiful golden-yellow in color. Their size is rather variable, ranging from eight ounces to well over one pound each.

As claimed by the Livingston Seed Company, they were the originator of oxheart tomatoes in the commercial seed industry. The pink-fruited 'Livingston's Oxheart' tomato was commercially introduced in 1926 and this yellow variety was released in 1929. Both are prominently featured on the back cover of their 1933 Seed Annual (see image above). Our original seed was sent to us in 2004 by a seed saver in Pennsylvania named Jeptha Yoder (PA YO J).
Fruit Color: Orange
Fruit Color: Yellow
Special Groups: Livingston Tomatoes
Special Groups: "Epic" Tomatoes
Harvest Timing: Late Season
Sow seeds indoors (do not direct sow into the garden), using sterile seed starting mix, 6 to 8 weeks before your last expected frost date. Plant 1/4" deep, water lightly but keep moist until emergence.

Full light and cooler temps (60° to 70°) will help to prevent the seedlings from becoming too leggy. If plants become rootbound before you can safely set them into the ground, transplant them into larger pots.

Harden off plants before planting outside. Young plants are very susceptible to frost and sunburn damage. Avoid too much nitrogen. Water evenly but not in excess.

Although the name of this variety contains a modern company's name, the seed we are offering is in no way sourced from, "owned by" or connected with that company. The name is simply the historically accurate, common name for the variety giving credit to the seedsman that originally released it.
