Landreth's Stringless

55 days — The pods of 'Landreth's Stringless' beans are green in color, round in cross-section, about five inches long, slightly curved, meaty and tasty, tender and nearly fiberless borne on twenty-inch tall, sturdy and erect plants.

This very old variety was originally introduced in 1885 by the old Landreth Seed Company. Each packet contains one ounce, which is approximately 65 seeds.
Although the name or description of this variety refers to a modern company using this same name, the seed we are offering is in no way sourced from, "owned by" or connected with that company. The name is simply the historically accurate, common name for the variety giving credit to the seedsmen that originally released it.
Planting Instructions: Beans prefer well-drained, rich soil in a sunny location. Make sure that you keep them well watered in the summer heat. Don’t bother trying to get an early start with beans – you’ll waste a lot of seed! Beans are tender and you should not plant them until all danger of frost has passed and the soil remains above 65ºF.

Sow seeds 1½ inches deep, every two to three inches. Bush-type beans do not require support.

Pick the pods while young as they are more tender and succulent and less likely to be stringy.

I had no trouble with this bean. The seeds all germinated and the only pests I had were cutworms early. They didn't seem to like these beans much and quickly moved on. According to my notes, I succession planted these starting in early June and they started producing in August. The harvest of each wave lasted one month. The beans were tender and tasty and I got enough out of a twelve foot double row to make four pints of pickled beans plus a dish of beans at dinner every three days. They resisted frost remarkably well for beans. I used a row cover and kept picking until the snow fell. Harvesting bush beans is hard on my back though, so I'm trying pole beans this year.

I live in town and have a backyard garden. I had two 15' rows of the Landreth's Stringless Bush Green Beans summer of 2010. I can not say enough about how great these beans performed. They had outstanding quanity, very tastey, easy to grow and maintain. There were two seperate crops of beans that we harvested. The nicest Green Bean I have ever grown, that's with about 60 years of experience as a farmer and gardener.
