Fivespot (Five Spot)
Nemophila maculata
Currently unavailable, we suggest Black Eyed Susan and Gayfeather as alternatives.
'Fivespot', also known as 'Five Spot', is an annual that flowers in the spring, and is native to California. Found in the Sierra foothills, but can be grown nearly everywhere. The plants grow six to twelve inches tall and spread about twelve inches. The flowers have five petals, are bowl-shaped, and are white with dark blue or purple veins and spots on the lobe tips, as its common name implies.
An annual, 'Fivespot' prefers a location that received full sun and sandy, well-drained soils, but can tolerate shadier locations and medium to fast draining garden soil. Commonly used in wildflower mixes, especially for bee, butterfly, and pollinator insect gardens. Once established, it only needs watered a couple of times per month. Tolerates cold down to 0° F. Closely related Baby Blue Eyes (Nemophila menziesii), this species should not be confused with Desert Fivespot (Eremalche rotundifolia). Each packet contains 1 gram.
Satisfactory results can be had by either direct sowing the seeds in early spring, or indoors at temperatures cooler than 70°F and in darkness for first three days. More uniform germination results can be experienced by stratifying for two months.
