Southern Pea (Cowpea)

65 days — A high bush type cowpea with an erect growth habit, concentrated set, and pods that are about seven inches long and easily shelled.  The seeds are small to medium sized, cream colored, not crowded in pod and are suitable for both canning and freezing.

Bred by the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville and released in 1978. Each ounce is approximately 240 to 260 seeds, a lot of seeds due to their small size.
Planting Instructions: Loosen the soil in a location that receives at least 6 to 8 hours of full sunlight per day. Add compost or fertilizer before planting and not after.

Sow seeds directly outdoors as soon as soil temperatures reach 70F. Optimal germination occurs between 75 to 95F. Plant ½ to one inch deep, 1 to 2 seeds every two inches. Keep moist until germination. Thin to one plant every 3 to 6 inches in rows spaced 24 to 36 inches apart. Irrigation is normally not necessary as they are renowned for their ability to grow under harsh conditions. For improved germination of hard seed, soak in warm water for four hours just prior to sowing.

★★★★★ Best Cream Pea

I bought seeds several years ago and have grown them every year since. I’ve shared seeds each year but had a crop failure last year due to something eating them before they matured. They are very creamy, and have a wonderful texture. Taste is most similar to Lady Peas but are easier to shell and get enough to cook because they are slightly larger.
