Early Detroit

67 days, indeterminate — 'Early Detroit' fruit are firm and juicy, beautifully bright-pink in color, two to four ounces in weight, globe-shaped, with a good flavor and a sweet aftertaste.

Bred by Mr. Rosendahl of Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas and released by the D. M. Ferry Seed Company in 1909.[1,2] Our seed originated from USDA GRIN accession number PI 355097. An interesting historical fact is that 'Gulf State Market' was found by Walter Richards of Crystal Springs, Mississippi as a single plant in a field of 'Early Detroit' tomatoes in 1917. Each packet contains approximately 20 seeds.

★★★★☆ Good Yields
By Brian Mitchell on December 29, 2018

I should state that the size range mentioned of 'two to four ounces' is incorrect. The historical literature shows Early Detroit should be in the six ounce range, and my personal observation bears this out as most of the fruit was 5-7 ounces.

The fruit are globe shaped pink tomatoes with very slight ruffling/ribbing on the shoulders. The taste is 55/45 ratio of sweet to tangy. The yield is high and impressive, especially considering our month long heat wave. Blossom drop was very, very minimal. This plant could do just as well south of the Mason-Dixon line as above it.

I can certainly recommend this fine, medium-sized tomato for pretty much all growers.

★★★★★ Taste is the key

Not only is this tomato early and reliable, but the taste is superb as well! Several who were the recipients of my extra plants declared it the best tomato they ever tasted!
