Southern Pea (Cowpea)

62 days — 'Coronet' is an improved pinkeye purplehull type. The plants are upright and compact. At the green shell stage (about 62 days), the peas are green with a light-red colored eye and its pods are purple and average length of about six inches. If allowed to grow to maturity and the seeds harvested dry, they have a maroon colored eye and a smooth seed coat.

'Coronet' was bred at the University of Georgia, Agricultural Experiment Station as a complex, but stabilized cross between 'Pinkeye Purple Hull' and 'Iron'. It reportedly has a tolerance to cowpea strains of Southern bean mosaic and cucumber mosaic viruses. Released in 1975. Each ounce is approximately 170 seeds.
Planting Instructions: Loosen the soil in a location that receives at least 6 to 8 hours of full sunlight per day. Add compost or fertilizer before planting and not after.

Sow seeds directly outdoors as soon as soil temperatures reach 70F. Optimal germination occurs between 75 to 95F. Plant ½ to one inch deep, 1 to 2 seeds every two inches. Keep moist until germination. Thin to one plant every 3 to 6 inches in rows spaced 24 to 36 inches apart. Irrigation is normally not necessary as they are renowned for their ability to grow under harsh conditions. For improved germination of hard seed, soak in warm water for four hours just prior to sowing.

★★★★★ These are THE peas you're looking for!!!
By Craig Bailey on January 9, 2020

These are the ole timey pink-eyed purple hull peas you remember as a child! Being from Alabama, (by the Grace of God)!, these are the same peas I helped plant, pick and shell when I was little! We put up 32 Qts. of the delicious peas last year with only two 75 ft. rows. Prolific, (will continue to produce all Summer), and EASY to grow and pick! Don't use ANY Fertilizer, (peas actually add nitrogen to the soil so adding fertilizer will reduce your yield), and pick when pea pod is Purple! THAT'S EASY!!! (P.S. 100% germination rate with the seeds from Victory)! Local feed and seed only had 50-70% Germ rate last year. Victory Seeds takes yet another Victory!
