Sowing Indoors

Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost. Sow seeds shallowly in fine seed-starting mix and keep soil moist at 65–85°F; bottom heat can improve germination. Seedlings emerge in 12-21 days. Once seedlings appear, provide bright light from a sunny windowsill or position 3-4 inches below fluorescent lights for 16 hours daily. Thin to one seedling per cell once two sets of leaves appear. Feed seedlings with a half-strength houseplant fertilizer when they are 3-4 weeks old. Harden off seedlings by gradually introducing them to outdoor conditions for one week before transplanting after frost.

Planting in the Garden

Choose a sheltered site with rich, well-drained soil in full to part shade. Prepare the soil by loosening it to 8 inches deep and incorporating compost if available. Space plants 12 inches apart. Dig a hole large enough to fit the root ball, set the plant level with the surrounding soil, and press soil firmly around the plant. Water thoroughly to eliminate air pockets and ensure good root contact. Mulch around plants to conserve moisture and improve soil over time.
