Burpee's 'Dwarf Giant'
80 days, dwarf — Burpee's 'Dwarf Giant', also sold simply as 'Dwarf Giant', has rugose leaf, bush-type plants producing oblate shaped, pink colored fruit that weigh up to about ten ounces. This is a variety whose first fruit are the largest with the late season fruit considerably smaller. In his 1911 book entitled, "Home Vegetable Gardening," garden writer F. F. Rockwell highly recommended Burpee's 'Dwarf Giant'. He said, "The fruit are tremendous in size and in quality unsurpassed by any. The vine is very healthy, strong and stocky. I believe this new tomato will become the standard main crop for the home garden. By all means try it. And that is a good deal to say for a novelty in its second year!"
Introduced in 1909 by W. A. Burpee, it is the result of a cross between 'Ponderosa' and 'Dwarf Champion'. Our original source was USDA accession number NSL 43541 that we received in 2003. It was very mixed up so took several years of work to re-select for the original traits. Each packet contains approximately 20 seeds.
Although the name or description of this variety refers to a modern company's name, the seed we are offering is in no way sourced from, "owned by" or connected with that company. The name is simply the historically accurate, common name for the variety giving credit to the seedsmen that originally released it.
