47 days — Synonyms of 'Bountiful' beans are 'Breck's Boston Snap', 'Improved Six Weeks', and 'Sutton's Plentiful'. The plants are fifteen to eighteen inches tall with a spread of twelve to eighteen inches. They are quite bushy and erect when young but like many older bush-type varieties, will send out short runners becoming somewhat straggly appearing when fully grown.
As the name implies, it is very productive, very early, vigorous, and hardy. The pods are six inches long, light green in color, broad and straight. It is excellent fresh, frozen or canned.
During the late 1890's, it was the common practice of several of the larger seed companies to introduce a few new varieties every year and then offer prizes to people to name them. In 1898, Peter Henderson & Company introduced their "New Green Bush Bean No. 1" and offered twenty-five dollars as a prize for the best name submission. The winner of the contest was Abel Steele of Ferguson, Ontario who sent in the name 'Bountiful'. It was formally introduced as 'Bountiful' in 1899.
Each ounce is approximately 85 seeds.
I loved how early these beans were. I could succession plant these beans into the beginning of August in Canada. They have good flavor and produced well. However, I found that allowing them to get to a larger size left them extremely stringy and fibrous. I had to de-string them for processing and therefore don't feel they deserve their "stringless" description. I grew them again this year, if you pick them young enough, they are a lovely string bean.
This is a nice bean but Ill probably not grow it again. For some reason they became stringy and almost inedible fairly quickly. Im comparing them to the royal burgundy which I grew alongside these. The royal burgundy surpassed these in texture, form, and flavor. I did notice that if I picked These very small they were very good, but if I let them achieve much length, they were, um, should I say ... something to be desired. Im glad I tried them and they definitely have the plus of being vigorous. I love this seed company by the way, bringing back age old varieties and just offering great and superb quality. Im no expert Gardner, just offering my experience. Thanks Victory Seeds!
