SKU: 3030931Food production here in the fertile soils of the Willamette Valley was once one of a primary industry of Oregon. 'Blue Lake' beans were bred for the canning and fresh-frozen industry. These pole-types were the preferred varieties until the cost of labor to hand pick soared and the invention of mechanical harvesters changed planting trends to bush-type beans.
Its pods are stringless when young and tender, dark green, round, tasty, and reach about six inches. They can be enjoyed fresh as snap beans, canned, frozen or dried. The flavor and texture is outstanding. The plants are vigorous, climb well, and are very productive.
Beans prefer well-drained, rich soil in a sunny location. Make sure you keep them well watered in the summer heat.
Beans are a tender vegetable and you should not plant them until all danger of frost has passed and the soil remains above 65ºF. Sow seeds 1-1½ inches deep, every two to three inches. Bush-type beans do not require support.
For seed saving, allow pods to remain on the plant until they are brittle and open easily. However, if you live in an area with a short growing season, harvest as close to dry as possible and finish drying indoors. Rain and freezing temps will damage beans.

We grew these for the first time this year on the second planting after having seed from another place fail to sprout. They grew so well I was able to stock my freezer for the winter months and gave some to family and friends. I was picking right up until it frosted here.

This is my very favorite bean. It's the only variety that has checked all the boxes. It produces so much, no strings, full of the classic sweet Blue Lake flavor, texture remains tender for a long time, and I don't have to bend over to pick these beans!

I've grown these beans for the last 3-4 years and I won't grow any other green bean. You simply can't beat the flavor or productivity! You won't be disappointed!

We really enjoyed these beans. The plants gave heavy yields and the beans were super tasty. They remained tender and flavorful even when they were allowed to get larger than ideal. I plan to grow this line every year from now on.

I'm a fairly new gardener so I haven't had much experience, but these were my first pole beans and they did great! They've been growing well and even if I leave them unpicked for a few days too many, they still taste great raw right off the vine. I recently harvested enough for our dinner and steamed them with some dill and it was great!

This is without a doubt the best green bean we have ever grown, and we've tried quite a few varieties! Productive, vigorous, and delicious. We are not always great about harvesting our beans frequently enough, and in the past we've had trouble with our beans getting tough when we let them get over-mature - these beans were tender and tasty even when old and huge! Definitely our go-to variety from now on.

This is a great variety of snap bean. I planted them for the first time this year and had a bountiful and very tasty crop. If you like green beans this variety should be on your short list.
