Ailsa Craig Tomato

Solanum lycopersicum

Price: $3.95

SKU: 3404411

75 days, indeterminate - 'Ailsa Craig' has regular-leaf plants that produce lots of slightly flattened globe shaped, red colored, two to four ounce tomatoes borne in clusters. Juicy and good flavored, it is popular as part of a traditional English breakfast.

Named after a small rocky island off of the west central Scottish coast near Girvan in Ayrshire, the 'Ailsa Craig' tomato embodies the ruggedness of the region. It was bred and stabilized by Alan Balch from a cross between 'Fillbasket' and 'Sunrise', and introduced in 1912 by Alexander and Brown of Perth, Scotland. At that time, it was said to be the only tomato that could be grown outdoors in South and Central Scotland; provided that it was placed in a sunny, sheltered location. It has been used as a greenhouse variety in Great Britain. Our original seed was USDA GRIN accession number PI 262995.

Sow seeds indoors (do not direct sow into the garden), using sterile seed starting mix, 6 to 8 weeks before your last expected frost date. Plant 1/4" deep, water lightly but keep moist until emergence.

Full light and cooler temps (60° to 70°) will help to prevent the seedlings from becoming too leggy. If plants become rootbound before you can safely set them into the ground, transplant them into larger pots.

Harden off plants before planting outside. Young plants are very susceptible to frost and sunburn damage. Avoid too much nitrogen. Water evenly but not in excess.
