85 days, dwarf — The rugose, potato-leaf plants of 'Wilpena' reach three to four feet in height by the end of the season and produce red colored, oblate shaped, juicy yet meaty, delicious, mild, well-balanced flavored slicing tomatoes. Although fruit average eight to twelve ounces each, they seem to be prone to double-blossomed first fruit that can make it up to twenty-eight ounces.
The "Sleepy family" originated from a cross made between 'Stump of the World' and 'Budai Torpe' by Patrina Nuske Small in 2005. 'Wilpena' was selected and named by Patrina after the Wilpena Pound; a huge natural mountainous amphitheater in the Flinders Range of South Australia. Significant contributions were made by Craig LeHoullier and Willa Osis, with Bill Minkey growing the final seed increase. Each packet contains at least 20 seeds.
I grew two of these this year (2024). They produced well, tasted good, and did fairly well with disease. We had considerably more heat and humidity this year than normal for this area. It is currently mid-August and I have tomatoes still ripening on the plants. I'll grow this tomato again.
The vigorous potato leaf plants yield a lot of medium to large smooth scarlet red tomatoes with a delicious, intense flavor. Give it a try!
