Waratah Open Source Seed Initiative

70 days, dwarf — The vigorous, high yielding, rugose, regular leaf plants of 'Waratah' produce smooth skinned, oblate shaped, red colored fruit that each range between six to twelve ounces in weight. The flavor is amazing. It starts off making you think it is going to taste like a standard red tomato profile, but the tart bite never happens and you are hit with a rich, well-balanced, delicious, sweet and fruity flavor.

This "Dwarf Tomato Project" variety was selected and named by Patrina Nuske Small from the project's "Plentiful family." Involved in its stabilization were Patrina, Craig LeHoullier, Paige Prince, Susan Dzejachok, Joyce Beggs, and Bill Minkey. Introduced for the 2016 gardening season. Each packet contains approximately 20 seeds.

★★★★☆ Great tasting classic red tomato
By Ryan Cheney on February 6, 2022

This one remained one of the healthiest looking tomato plants of the 9 varieties I grew last season. I grew this one in a fabric pot and the fruit were that classic round, red, picture perfect tomato, albeit more medium in size. Used in both salads and the occasional batch of salsa, the taste was exceptional. The only issue I had is, after the initial harvest of ripe fruit, the remainder mostly refused to ripen until the weather turned cooler. This stands to reason as some tomato varieties cease production in exceptionally hot temps, and well, this was one of them.

★★★★☆ An abundance of very tasty fruit.

I grew the Waratah tomato for the first time in 2020 season in New Jersey. Plants are full and grow up to 4 feet. Very healthy plants. An abundance of very tasty fruit. I'll grow them again in 2021.

★★★★★ Awesome tomato
By Mary Bready on August 24, 2016

This is a truly amazing tomato. The size and taste is anything but dwarf! Ours grew to around four feet in height and produced an abundance of fruit. Plan to grow them next season in greenhouse as standard indeterminate varieties seem to take up too much space. Highly recommend.
