Leaf-type

Currently unavailable, we suggest Ruby Leaf, and Oak Leaf as alternatives.

50 days — The leaves of 'Tango' are extremely frilly and almost look like endive. The plants are attractive, uniform, and dark green in color. Leaves are tangy tender but hold up well to salad dressings. You can harvest and use young leaves in a "cut and come again" fashion or wait until they mature into tight, compact rosettes. Best if grown as a cool season crop as like many lettuce varieties, it can become bitter in hot weather. Each packet contains one gram, which is approximately 500 to 600 seeds.
Planting Instructions: Lettuce and other greens thrive in cool spring and fall weather (50° F to 60° F). A few greens can handle summer heat, but most of them prefer the cooler temperatures of spring and fall. Most lettuce and greens can withstand occasional exposure to light frost but if very cold weather is coming, protect your plants with a frost cover.

Sowing: Prepare the seedbed outdoors using a hard tined rake, smoothening out the soil. Lightly sow and just barely cover the seeds with soil. Keep soil moist until germination is achieved. You can also start seeds indoors by sowing into seed starting trays using fresh new seed starting potting mix into clean seed starting trays. Just barely cover the seeds and keep well watered until they sprout. Harden off and transplant into the garden after about 3 weeks.

I grew this lettuce in a planter all last summer and it was beautiful. Lovely taste. Picked as it grew, which prevented bolting. I didn't feel like it became bitter in the summer sun, but I live coastal so our average sumer temperature doesn't exceed 80 degrees. Full sun left some burn on the tips, but I rectified this by moving to a portion of the patio with only half sun throughout the day. It made wonderful salads everyday for 2 months. Will certainly grow again in spring.
