Shackelford Giant Pink Tomato
Price: $4.45
SKU: 3405191'Shackelford Giant Pink' originated when Harrison and Ruby Garrett answered a classified advertisement that appeared in a Progressive Farmer magazine in the early 1970s offering "Mexican Tomatoes." The Garretts grew and enjoyed the monstrous fruit, passing it down to their daughter, Carla Shackelford. Along with her husband Tom, the Shackelfords took up the charge, and grew the tomatoes for many years in their North Mississippi garden. A family favorite, Carla described how one tomato, peeled, cored, and chopped was enough to entirely fill a quart jar. Tomato sandwiches were a staple as well, made memorable by the extreme size of the tomatoes - one slice, one sandwich!
We received our original seed sample from Craig LeHoullier who had received the variety from Philip Shackelford, Carla's grandson.[1,2] Introduced by the Victory Seed company for the 2022 gardening season.
Color: Purple
Harvest Timing: Late Season
Genetic Classification: Open Pollinated
Full light and cooler temps (60° to 70°) will help to prevent the seedlings from becoming too leggy. If plants become rootbound before you can safely set them into the ground, transplant them into larger pots.
Harden off plants before planting outside. Young plants are very susceptible to frost and sunburn damage. Avoid too much nitrogen. Water evenly but not in excess.

This was one of the very first varieties to germinate! Perfect germination rate, too- both the first and the second year from leftover seeds. Abraham Brown and Romas were the other two with absolutely perfect germination.

I was sent just a few seeds of this by Phil Shackelford. I love to grow family heirlooms - to see how unique they may be, to see if they are similar to known varieties, to check out the performance. One seed germinated, I grew it, then stood back in amazement at the plant vigor, health, productivity - and that monster fruit size. It is a very meaty tomato, the flavor is reminiscent of German Johnson and the like (mild, sweet, pleasant). For canning and for sauce, this one is top notch due to the size and meatiness. In my 40 years of gardening, this variety provided one of the largest I've ever grown.
