Russian Red Tomato

Solanum lycopersicum

Price: $2.95

SKU: 3401561

75 days, dwarf - 'Russian Red' is very hardy and will grow in marginal conditions. Its plants are a dwarf-type with rugose, regular leaves, and reach about five feet high. The fruit are red, small, and juicy delivering a great, balanced flavor.

Bred in 1943 at the Levin Agricultural Research Centre (New Zealand), 'Russian Red' was originally released in 1949. Commercially it was not popular as its fruit were considered "too small" for the marketplace. In spite of this, it became the most popular New Zealand home garden variety.

Our original seed was sent to us by our gardening friend in New Zealand, Glenn Parker.
Fruit Color: Red
Special Groups: Container Friendly
Harvest Timing: Main Crop / Mid-Season
Sow seeds indoors (do not direct sow into the garden), using sterile seed starting mix, 6 to 8 weeks before your last expected frost date. Plant 1/4" deep, water lightly but keep moist until emergence.

Full light and cooler temps (60° to 70°) will help to prevent the seedlings from becoming too leggy. If plants become rootbound before you can safely set them into the ground, transplant them into larger pots.

Harden off plants before planting outside. Young plants are very susceptible to frost and sunburn damage. Avoid too much nitrogen. Water evenly but not in excess.

Nice shape, color, texture. Nice tangy yet mild flavor. Does seem hearty. Has not cracked. More like 90 days here. With that said I will try another variety next year. This one did not stand out in flavor. Lacked the sweetness.
