Riesentraube Tomato

Solanum lycopersicum

Price: $2.95

SKU: 3403801

71 days, indeterminate - The vines are extremely productive, vigorous, sprawling and benefit from support. They start producing early, bearing fruit in large clusters throughout the season up until first frost. 'Riesentraube' fruit are red in color, globe-shaped, are about one-inch in diameter and weigh about one ounce each. They are bite-sized and surprisingly deliver a complex flavor unlike common cherry tomatoes.

In her book entitled, "100 Heirloom Tomatoes for the American Gardener," Carolyn Male has this to say, "'Riesentraube has long been grown in Europe, especially in Germany, and was available in Philadelphia in the mid-1800s. A friend even made wine from it - as was done in the past - and it had a delicious, pale sherry taste."

Originally from Germany, it was introduced in the U.S. in 1994. Riesentraube roughly translates to "giant grape."
Tomato Uses: Small Fruits / Salads
Fruit Color: Red
Harvest Timing: Early/Short Season
Sow seeds indoors (do not direct sow into the garden), using sterile seed starting mix, 6 to 8 weeks before your last expected frost date. Plant 1/4" deep, water lightly but keep moist until emergence.

Full light and cooler temps (60° to 70°) will help to prevent the seedlings from becoming too leggy. If plants become rootbound before you can safely set them into the ground, transplant them into larger pots.

Harden off plants before planting outside. Young plants are very susceptible to frost and sunburn damage. Avoid too much nitrogen. Water evenly but not in excess.
