Shiso has a long history of use in traditional East Asian medicine, where it was valued for its soothing effects on digestion, seasonal discomforts, and mild respiratory issues. Its aromatic oils, especially perillaldehyde and rosmarinic acid, have been said to calm the stomach and support overall wellness.
Shiso needs to be stratified before sowing. To achieve the best results, we recommend storing the seeds in an airtight container in a refrigerator or freezer before sowing. Soaking the seeds in water for 12-24 hours prior to sowing hastens germination too. Sow in the spring outdoors after all danger of frost is over, or start indoors 6-8 weeks before your last frost date. Soil temperature of 65°–75°F is recommended. Sow the seeds shallowly, as they need light to germinate.
