Red Romaine
Romaine or Cos-type
Bred and introduced by the Dessert Seed Company, El Centro, California in 1950, it was reportedly from a selection of a variety originating from Africa. Each packet contains one gram, which is approximately 500 to 600 seeds.
Planting Instructions: Lettuce and other greens thrive in cool spring and fall weather (50° F to 60° F). A few greens can handle summer heat, but most of them prefer the cooler temperatures of spring and fall. Most lettuce and greens can withstand occasional exposure to light frost but if very cold weather is coming, protect your plants with a frost cover.
Sowing: Prepare the seedbed outdoors using a hard tined rake, smoothening out the soil. Lightly sow and just barely cover the seeds with soil. Keep soil moist until germination is achieved. You can also start seeds indoors by sowing into seed starting trays using fresh new seed starting potting mix into clean seed starting trays. Just barely cover the seeds and keep well watered until they sprout. Harden off and transplant into the garden after about 3 weeks.

Romaine Winter Performance
Mildred Kaping on 12/16/2020
I'm rather surprised that no one has given this lettuce a review. We have been growing it for about four years with excellent results. It is December 16 and we have been growing this side by side with Rouge D'Hiver. Your red Romaine is out performing the Rouge D'Hiver for us. Heads are larger and a bit tighter. Both are a beautiful dark burgundy in winter. We have had temps into the low 20s and it is toughing it out without cover. First hard frost did burn the edges of a few outer leaves, but none since then. We have had some freezing rain/ice crystals, etc. Right now it looks like we will be sticking to this one. I usually start some plants indoors, under lights, to get a head start on hot weather giving us about ten months of lettuce. Thanks Victory Seeds.
