SKU: 10005961Prilep P66-9/7 is an oriental tobacco bred at the Department of Genetics and Breeding at the Tobacco Institute in Prilep, Macedonia. Between 1992 and 2002, breeders crossed several Prilep varieties to develop a more productive oriental tobacco with better yields and quality. P66-9/7 was the most promising line from that work. It was officially recognized as a new variety in 2004, and by 2010 it made up 70 to 80 percent of Macedonia's Prilep tobacco production.
Plants grow about 4 1/2 feet tall in a narrow, columnar shape. Each plant carries 50 to 55 upturned leaves packed densely on the stalk. The leaves are light green and heavily crinkled. They measure 6 to 8 inches wide and 10 to 14 inches long, depending on how they're grown. Prilep P66-9/7 grows in light, thin soils as well as more fertile soils, with little difference in leaf quality between them. It can be spaced closer than most tobaccos, with only 14 to 16 inches between plants.
Plants reach maturity in 70 to 75 days and form a dense flower head similar to Hungarian types. The lower leaves start ripening about two weeks before flowering, and most of the remaining leaves ripen one after another once the plant blooms. Sun cured leaves turn yellow orange, and air cured leaves turn light orange brown.
Nicotine content ranges from 1 to 2.3 percent, and soluble sugars range from 18.5 to 29 percent. Irrigated plants are lower in both nicotine and sugar than plants grown in dry conditions. When smoked, Prilep P66-9/7 is medium in strength with a full, very sweet taste and a strong aroma. It is used for blending in cigarettes, and a small amount is enough to add its sweetness and aroma to a blend.

Tobacco plants are very interesting, ornamental, and have many uses apart from consumption. Tobacco seeds are not classified as tobacco products. We promote the cultivation of tobacco plants, but we do not promote the use of tobacco products.
Tobacco seeds are tiny and look like dust, but each one has the potential to quickly grow into a huge tobacco plant. They need light to germinate. Sprinkle the seeds onto the surface of a moist and sterile seed starting mix. Do not cover the seeds. They also must never be allowed to dry out, so they are frequently (but gently) watered using a mist from a spray bottle. While waiting for germination, it can help to cover them with some kind of plastic sheeting to help hold moisture.
Once tiny seedlings emerge, you can pick them out one by one and move them into individual cells. Very lightly fertilize and never allow the potting soil to dry out. Within 6 weeks it'll be ready to plant in the garden. Wait until all risk of frost is over before planting outdoors.
