Papaver somniferum
Papaver somniferum
The beautiful, unusually deep purple colored flowers of 'Lauren's Grape' bloom in the summer. Plants grow twelve to thirty inches. Poppies prefer partial sun and dry soil.
Seeds should be surface sown, directly into your garden, in the late winter to early spring. They require temperature fluctuations in order for the seeds to break dormancy. They are quite tiny so mixing with sand may aid in distribution.
If you are sowing indoors, surface sow on sterile seed starting mix, use a mister to water them in, and cover the pot or flat so that the seeds do not dry out. Place into your refrigerator for about twelve hours, remove and keep at room temperature for twelve hours. Repeat this cycle for about a week. This process is an attempt to mimic the natural conditions it requires. Germination typically occurs in about 30 days.
Each packet contains 0.25 gram, which is approximately 800 seeds.
