Peak of Perfection Tomato

Solanum lycopersicum

Price: $2.95

SKU: 3401151

90 days, indeterminate - 'Peak of Perfection' has vigorous, productive plants with pink fruit that are smooth, globe-shaped, six to eight ounces each, and that are nice, mild flavored.

According to the John A. Salzer Seed Company of La Crosse, Wisconsin, seeds were initially distributed free of charge, to a select group of "customers and friends" in 1927, under the name "Salzer's New Wonder." A contest was run with prizes awarded for the largest tomato and for the best name submission. Awards were announced and 'Peak of Perfection' was officially introduced in their 1928 seed catalog as follows:

"We gave free seeds of this tomato to our customers and friends last spring under the name of New Wonder and offered prizes for the largest tomato grown and for the best name for this beauty. Mr. Aero Castle, Hueysville, Ky., won the prize of $25.00 cash for the largest tomato with a weight of 4 pounds 7 ounces. Think of a monster tomato like that! Miss Adell Day, 241 Thieme Pl., Utica, N. Y., won the prize of $10.00 in trade for the best name, Peak Of Perfection, which was selected by the judges after careful consideration."[1]

Fruit Color: Pink
Fruit Color: Purple
Special Groups: "Epic" Tomatoes
Harvest Timing: Late Season
Sow seeds indoors (do not direct sow into the garden), using sterile seed starting mix, 6 to 8 weeks before your last expected frost date. Plant 1/4" deep, water lightly but keep moist until emergence.

Full light and cooler temps (60° to 70°) will help to prevent the seedlings from becoming too leggy. If plants become rootbound before you can safely set them into the ground, transplant them into larger pots.

Harden off plants before planting outside. Young plants are very susceptible to frost and sunburn damage. Avoid too much nitrogen. Water evenly but not in excess.
