Orange Tree Tomato

Solanum lycopersicum

Price: $2.95

SKU: 3401891

90 days, dwarf - 'Orange Tree', as its name implies, produces orange colored, medium sized, flattened-globe shaped fruit on compact plants. Its leaves are not as rugose as other tree-type varieties, and do oddly curl in upon themselves, nearly identically to 'Extreme Bush'.

This is a very interesting variety.  It was originally obtained from the National Seed Lab (accession number NSL 27967) by author and tomato authority Craig LeHoullier in 1995 and sent to us in 2003. He described it to us as, ". . . a real odd ball, very short, odd curled foliage, ping pong ball sized orange fruit, for pots [and] for the curious!"
Fruit Color: Orange
Fruit Color: Yellow
Special Groups: Container Friendly
Harvest Timing: Late Season
Sow seeds indoors (do not direct sow into the garden), using sterile seed starting mix, 6 to 8 weeks before your last expected frost date. Plant 1/4" deep, water lightly but keep moist until emergence.

Full light and cooler temps (60° to 70°) will help to prevent the seedlings from becoming too leggy. If plants become rootbound before you can safely set them into the ground, transplant them into larger pots.

Harden off plants before planting outside. Young plants are very susceptible to frost and sunburn damage. Avoid too much nitrogen. Water evenly but not in excess.
