Orange King

85 days, semi-determinate — 'Orange King' has beautiful, compact plants that tend to be loaded with flowers. A case of "not judging a book by its cover," they taste like a good red tomato; tart but mild and not sweet like you might expect from an orange variety. The fruit are four to eleven ounces each, oblate-shaped, and a bright orange color inside and out. The juice looks like orange juice.

Bred as a cross of 'New Hampshire Victor' and an orange sport of 'Scarlet Dawn' by Dr. Albert F. Yeager, Department of Horticulture, University of New Hampshire and released in 1943. Sent to us by David Pendergrass from USDA ARS accession number NSL 6884. Each packet contains approximately 20 seeds.
Fruit Color: Orange
Fruit Color: Yellow
Harvest Timing: Main Crop / Mid-Season
Genetic Classification: Determinate and Semi-Determinate

★★★☆☆ Fairly tasty and attractive tomato

You'll notice the difference in the semi-determinate plant, as it finished about seven weeks earlier than the indeterminate plants alongside it. Started indoors in March, it yielded for a few weeks in June and July. My family found that the tartness made it less pleasant to eat than other yellow/orange varieties -- We preferred 'Jubilee' -- but it gave us several tasty fruit despite a rough watering and weather year.
