Sow Oats in early spring for grain production or in early fall for cover cropping. Broadcast or drill seeds about 1 inch deep in well-drained soil. For best results, seed at a rate of 90 lbs per acre (3–4 lbs per 1,000 sq ft). Keep soil moist during germination, which usually occurs within a week. For winter cover, plant by early September in northern regions or mid-September to mid-October in southern areas. Oats will winter kill around 15°F, leaving a residue that protects and enriches the soil.
