Oats are a cool season annual grass grown for multiple purposes including forage, grain harvest, and cover cropping. Like all of the seeds we sell, these Oat seeds are non-GMO.

Oats can be planted in early spring for grain production or harvested at earlier stages for hay. They are also a reliable option for fall planting as a cover crop to capture leftover nutrients, control weeds, and prevent erosion. When planted for winter cover, sow in mid-September to mid-October in the South, or early September in the North. Oats will winter kill at around 15°F, leaving behind a protective stubble that helps prevent soil erosion without regrowth in spring.

As a fast-germinating, quick-growing crop, oats work well as a nurse crop when underseeded with legumes. They establish quickly, produce abundant biomass, and soften compacted soils. Their dense growth helps suppress weeds, while the residue provides mulch and organic matter for soil improvement.
Lifespan: Annual

Sow Oats in early spring for grain production or in early fall for cover cropping. Broadcast or drill seeds about 1 inch deep in well-drained soil. For best results, seed at a rate of 90 lbs per acre (3–4 lbs per 1,000 sq ft). Keep soil moist during germination, which usually occurs within a week. For winter cover, plant by early September in northern regions or mid-September to mid-October in southern areas. Oats will winter kill around 15°F, leaving a residue that protects and enriches the soil.
