New Big Dwarf Tomato

In the 2024 growing season I tried 3 Dwarf Tomato varieties and Big Dwarf Red was definitely my favorite. Seedlings started indoors mid April, 100% germination, planted out in 20 gallon-self watering planter on the deck late May, full sun. The plant reached a sturdy 3.5 feet, produced slicer to "saladette" sized tomatoes from mid July to late September. Tomatoes did not crack or experience blossom end rot which was nice, and somewhat surprising considering the volume of rain we received during the season. Wonderful taste! Just the right amount of sweetness and acidity. The production rate and size were okay, given the poor seasonal growing conditions of 2024 (mix of heavy rain, extreme heat, cold). I look forward to planting again in 2025 main garden (raised garden bed area) which usually yields a larger size tomato and greater production rate. Really enjoyed this tomatoes flavor and it's resilience in a difficult growing season.

I am very happy with these plants. I ordered different seeds from Victory Seed and these were a free sample. Started the seeds indoors in March then outside in raised garden area at the end of May. Don't let the term "dwarf" fool you. These are still about 4ft tall and bushy. My other tomato plants had yellow, maybe diseased looking leaves by mid-August. This has happened to me over the past few years w many tomato types. Not these new big dwarf though. They're pumping out huge tomatoes like crazy! I like my tomatoes pretty acidic. These fit that bill, so if you're looking for a sweet tomato, this isn't it. I will always grow these from now on. I'm very pleased w the quality of the seeds as well

This was the shortest dwarf plant I have grown (staying under four feet tall). But it was also one of the top producers in terms of total yield. And it held up extremely well in the weeks-long heat wave with almost no blossom drop.

The pink fruit ranged in size from 5 to 15 ounces, but typically were 8 ounces. They were very good tasting with a well-balanced flavor.

The only strike against it is the somewhat irregular fruit shape, though most are oblate with minor ribbing at the shoulders.

I grew it in a 10 gallon fabric pot and it produced well over twenty pounds of yummy tomatoes. Pretty impressive considering its short stature. Highly recommend (and I wish I could give it four-and-a-half stars).

Planted two dwarf varieties and both were very late to produce, This one and Rosella Purple. This tomato is only just now producing fruit. It had blossoms in spring and summer but most fell off. I got about two tomatoes from each plant in the summer. Both were excellent. Now, both plants are beautiful and loaded with big fruit. There are tons of blossoms and fruits on both plants! The weather looks ideal for the next ten days! So I am hoping they all ripen! Both were grown in 15 gallon pots. With weekly spraying both remained disease free and very healthy with deep green leaves. Maybe it just gets too hot for them here in summer. I shaded both at 85 degrees and when we had a hot spell I brought them indoors. Next year I will start them earlier and go easy on the nitrogen and maybe they will produce earlier.

I am growing a few in 7.5 gal. pots and my neighbor is growing her New Big Dwarf in the ground. So far, two ripe tomatoes and I have to say that the flavor is outstanding! Sweet, then tangy followed by complex richness. Delicious! I am growing 37 different tomato varieties this summer and this tomato is number 1 for taste in pink tomatoes so far. I will be growing it again next year, but in the ground for increased yields and away from the heat of the patio which it doesn't like at all. A keeper in my garden.
