Music Garlic is a porcelain-type hardneck garlic with rich, full flavor. First brought from Italy to Canada by Al Music in the 1980s, this variety has become one of the most widely grown hardneck types.
The flavor is complex and bold, with a mildly hot, musky taste when raw and a sweet, smooth character when roasted. Each large bulb produces about 4-6 cloves, often over 2 inches in size, wrapped in white skins that may show pink to purple hues. The cloves are easy to peel.
Music Garlic is very cold tolerant and well suited for fall planting in cooler climates. It produces strong, vigorous plants with long roots that overwinter well and resist heaving. In early summer, the plants send up curly scapes that can be harvested for a mild garlic flavor in cooking or even used as a decorative cut flower.
The large, tightly wrapped bulbs store well for 9-12 months. It is considered one of the hardiest garlics, with some resistance to disease.
