40 days โ€” "Marvel of Four Seasons," as the name suggests, is a marvelous lettuce variety that can be grown nearly year-round. This French heirloom was first introduced to Americans on the classic PBS series, "The Victory Garden." Ruby red-tipped leaves that surround tight folded green hearts. Does great through the summer heat and can withstand down to 20ยบF in a sealed greenhouse or in cloches. Each packet contains one gram, which is approximately 500 to 600 seeds.
Planting Instructions: Lettuce and other greens thrive in cool spring and fall weather (50ยฐ F to 60ยฐ F). A few greens can handle summer heat, but most of them prefer the cooler temperatures of spring and fall. Most lettuce and greens can withstand occasional exposure to light frost but if very cold weather is coming, protect your plants with a frost cover.

Sowing: Prepare the seedbed outdoors using a hard tined rake, smoothening out the soil. Lightly sow and just barely cover the seeds with soil. Keep soil moist until germination is achieved. You can also start seeds indoors by sowing into seed starting trays using fresh new seed starting potting mix into clean seed starting trays. Just barely cover the seeds and keep well watered until they sprout. Harden off and transplant into the garden after about 3 weeks.

โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜… Best Lettuce!
By Kyle on August 11, 2021

This is the best lettuce I've grown in my garden. It tolerates quite a bit of crowding and has been producing beautifully for at least two months without bolting. Every day I cut enough leaves for a bowl of salad and there's always plenty the next day, and it tastes absolutely delicious! As a bonus it also survived the extreme heat wave in late June in direct sun with just twice-daily watering.

My favorite lettuce I've grown so far.Pretty! The red coloration seems to get stronger with more sun. Taste is mild and succulent. Good germination, easy to grow, did not bolt.

โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜… great wintertime lettuce
By Kathleen Kish on January 22, 2013

I chose this lettuce for overwintering during periods of below freezing temperatures. This lettuce is currently thriving well into the wintertime in raised beds inside a Hoop House where they were directly sown. Beautiful color and very delicious. No problems with pests or disease.
