Mama Leone
85 days, indeterminate — The regular leaf plants of 'Mama Leone' produce a good yield of two to six ounce, red colored, elongated, paste-type fruit.
We received our seed from Dr. Carolyn Male and started growing this out in 2008. She told us that this variety was, "... first listed in the SSE Yearbook in 2005 by NY KI N who purchased plants at a local nursery who had been given the seeds by one of their local customers who had immigrated to the U.S. from Italy, along with their seeds, many years prior."
The nursery referred to in the original SSE introduction is Nanticoke Gardens in Endicott, New York. Interestingly, our preservation mission was again proved as valuable when we received an order from Nanticoke Gardens telling us that they had lost their seed stock in a recent flood. They said that they, "... cannot believe it is available online!" We have been supplying them since. Each packet contains approximately 20 seeds.
Note: We have been asked if this variety is connected with the famous Mama (Louisa) Leone's Italian restaurant that was located in the theater district of New York City from 1906 to 1959. We have tried to research this further but have run into the proverbial brick wall.
