Kookaburra Cackle Tomato
Price: $3.95
SKU: 3403541This "Dwarf Tomato Project" variety originated with a cross between an early generation "Sleepy family" selection called 'Wilpena' and 'Cherokee Purple' made by Patrina Nuske Small in 2008 and named "Plentiful." 'Kookaburra Cackle' was selected and named by Patrina. When asked the significance behind the name, Patrina said, "Kookaburra [is] an iconic Australian bird similar to a kingfisher but brown and beige, and the song / call sounds like a human laughing, hence the 'cackle'."
Other project members to helped stabilized this variety were Patrina, Rich Hawksworth, and Craig LeHoullier. The starting seed sample was grown and provided by Bill Minkey. Introduced for the 2016 gardening season.

Full light and cooler temps (60° to 70°) will help to prevent the seedlings from becoming too leggy. If plants become rootbound before you can safely set them into the ground, transplant them into larger pots.
Harden off plants before planting outside. Young plants are very susceptible to frost and sunburn damage. Avoid too much nitrogen. Water evenly but not in excess.

Bought these Kookaburra Cackle seeds last year (2023) but, did not plant them until this year (2024). Wow! What a great tomato. Outstanding, loud, dark tomato flavor. Great umami flavor that lingers on the palette. I grew 30 varieties of tomatoes this year and Kookaburra Cackle was one of the best for flavor and disease resistance. The best out of the 10 dwarfs I have grown. Will definitely grow again. I highly recommend it.

In my second year trying to grow vegetables from seeds (or really trying to garden) I grew a few of these plants. They grew very nicely and became strong and healthy looking plants. The fruit they produce is a browish/redish striped tomato that is very interesting to look at. The flavor of the fruit is very earthy and bold. Out of all the tomatoes I grew they by far had the strongest flavor. I really enjoyed them and will be growing them again.
