Kim's Civil War Oxheart Tomato

Solanum lycopersicum

Price: $2.95

SKU: 3402991

65 days, indeterminate - If I had to use one word to describe 'Kim's Civil War Oxheart', it would be, "Wow!" The heart-shaped fruit are pink, large (reaching up to twenty ounces), solid with very few seeds, tasty, and really early for such a large tomato. The regular leaf vines are vigorous and huge.

Sent to us by a fellow Certified Naturally Grown (CNG) farmer, Linda Taylor of Boring, Oregon who received seeds from a neighbor. The family has been growing it since the Civil War-era.
Fruit Color: Pink
Fruit Color: Purple
Harvest Timing: Early/Short Season
Sow seeds indoors (do not direct sow into the garden), using sterile seed starting mix, 6 to 8 weeks before your last expected frost date. Plant 1/4" deep, water lightly but keep moist until emergence.

Full light and cooler temps (60° to 70°) will help to prevent the seedlings from becoming too leggy. If plants become rootbound before you can safely set them into the ground, transplant them into larger pots.

Harden off plants before planting outside. Young plants are very susceptible to frost and sunburn damage. Avoid too much nitrogen. Water evenly but not in excess.

★★★★★ Great Tomato!
By Mama Dirt (Southern NM mountains, 6800+') on August 30, 2025

I grew these for the first time this year (2025) & am quite impressed! Even though the tomatoes got planted late this season the Kim's Civil War oxheart quickly grew & started putting out fruits. I recently ate the first fruit to come ripe, ate it like an apple right there on the spot in the garden. The flavor was rich, & though a little on the sweeter side, it had that good old fashioned tomato flavor of days gone by. These meaty tomatoes would be great on a BLT! The vine has quite a few fruits on it in various stages of ripeness right now, the sizes ranging from chicken egg to goose egg. I am at 6800+' in the mountains, where the days can be hot, but the nights can dip down into the 50s during the summer months. Quite a few varieties of tomatoes, I've found over the many years of gardening here, don't like those wild temp swings, but it doesn't seem to bother the Kim's oxheart. Will be planting more of these in future gardens for sure!

★★★★★ A Keeper

Excellent plants. Great producer of large pink to red tomatoes. They have been producing for me all season and are still going strong. They are a drier tomato good for sauces or sandwiches. This one plant has produced at least 20 tomatoes as big as my fist. The plant is over 6 ft tall and 4 ft wide. Most of my plants were comparable to that.

★★★★☆ Nice tomato

Just as described. A wonderful, fast, large tomato with good flavor. These started producing a month earlier than most.

★★★★★ Favorite Tomato of 2016
By Valerie MacMillan on February 19, 2017

2016 was the second year of vegetable gardening in my very sandy and not very healthy soil. Despite the short growing season and lousy soil, Kim's Civil War Oxheart was my showstopper of the year. It arrived early and was the tastiest tomato out of the several varieties I grew. Highly recommended for the shorter, cooler seasons of the upper Midwest.
