Italian Gold Tomato

Solanum lycopersicum

Price: $3.95

SKU: 3402651

90 days, determinate - 'Italian Gold' is a very productive, Roma-type paste tomato but instead of the typical red color, they mature to a beautiful golden-orange. Its fruit are borne in clusters of about six, average five ounces in weight, are meaty, sweet and excellent for paste and sauces.

Although we have listed the days to maturity at 90 days, we based this on our actual observations for the 2012 growing season here in Oregon. It was a less than ideal growing season delaying nearly all tomato varieties. Other folks have reported maturity days in the 75 to 85 day range.

This variety was sent to us by New York's "Tomato Queen", Audrey Deane. She told us that they were once readily available but have all but disappeared and described them as, "Beautifully shaped plants (that) have a compact growth habit, perfect Roma-shape, golden-orange colored fruit, and terrific blight resistance. 'Italian Gold' fits perfectly in the palm of your hand and is exceptionally flavorful with few seeds. It also makes a fantastic orange tomato sauce that pairs perfectly with fresh seafood!"
Tomato Uses: Paste
Fruit Color: Orange
Fruit Color: Yellow
Harvest Timing: Late Season
Sow seeds indoors (do not direct sow into the garden), using sterile seed starting mix, 6 to 8 weeks before your last expected frost date. Plant 1/4" deep, water lightly but keep moist until emergence.

Full light and cooler temps (60° to 70°) will help to prevent the seedlings from becoming too leggy. If plants become rootbound before you can safely set them into the ground, transplant them into larger pots.

Harden off plants before planting outside. Young plants are very susceptible to frost and sunburn damage. Avoid too much nitrogen. Water evenly but not in excess.
