Hillbilly Tomato

Solanum lycopersicum

Price: $2.95

SKU: 3400331

85 days, indeterminate - The fruit are large, up to one pound, oblate-shaped, orange-yellow with red streaks in color and mild tasting.

In the past few years, a couple of seed merchants have incorrectly been claiming that 'Hillbilly' is also known as "Flame."  According to our friend, the late Dr. Carolyn Male, this is false. Although there is a tomato variety called 'Flame', it is a relatively newly released (circa 1984) bi-color. Originally introduced as "Olympic Flame," it was quickly renamed "Old Flame" due to trademark claims, and over the years, the name has become commonly shortened to simply "Flame."

'Hillbilly' is reportedly an heirloom variety from West Virginia.
Special Groups: "Epic" Tomatoes
Harvest Timing: Late Season
Sow seeds indoors (do not direct sow into the garden), using sterile seed starting mix, 6 to 8 weeks before your last expected frost date. Plant 1/4" deep, water lightly but keep moist until emergence.

Full light and cooler temps (60° to 70°) will help to prevent the seedlings from becoming too leggy. If plants become rootbound before you can safely set them into the ground, transplant them into larger pots.

Harden off plants before planting outside. Young plants are very susceptible to frost and sunburn damage. Avoid too much nitrogen. Water evenly but not in excess.

I found this on someone else's top 5 list and I'm so glad I tried it. The fruit are meaty and sweet, and so beautiful when you slice them. They are great on sandwiches and would make a lovely pinkish sauce. I have clay soil and it did fine in it. I'd wish for more tomatoes, but we had early heat, so for a month, it was hard for fruits to set, but I think in a place that it never gets over 90F, it'd be superb. I will definitely grow again next year.
