German Yellow Stripe Tomato

Solanum lycopersicum

Price: $3.95

SKU: 3401791

78 days, indeterminate - This old family heirloom tomato is a large (weighing up to forty ounces), bi-colored (yellow marbled with red), beefsteak-type fruit. Along with being an attractive fruit, 'German Yellow Stripe' tomatoes are juicy, sweet, mild and offer nice, complex aftertastes.

These seeds were sent to us by seed saver Bob Belins of Winchester, Kentucky in 2005. He said, "These seeds were given to me from the local barber, age 72, from the Hazard, Kentucky area. They were given to him many years prior having originated from the mountains of Kentucky."
Harvest Timing: Main Crop / Mid-Season
Sow seeds indoors (do not direct sow into the garden), using sterile seed starting mix, 6 to 8 weeks before your last expected frost date. Plant 1/4" deep, water lightly but keep moist until emergence.

Full light and cooler temps (60° to 70°) will help to prevent the seedlings from becoming too leggy. If plants become rootbound before you can safely set them into the ground, transplant them into larger pots.

Harden off plants before planting outside. Young plants are very susceptible to frost and sunburn damage. Avoid too much nitrogen. Water evenly but not in excess.

★★★★★ A Wonderful Tomato
By Rachel Langmaid on January 26, 2016

It's not easy to find a huge heirloom tomato that ripens reliably for us at our elevation (1100 feet), but this one delivers. Between the gorgeous yellow, orange and red marbled interior, meaty flesh, and full flavor this tomato is one of my top five favorites. We ate these on sandwiches, sliced with olive oil, salt & pepper, in salads, & cooked. The slices dry beautifully. We had several fruits between 1.5 and 2 lbs. Definitely a keeper.
