Gaia

50 days — 'Gaia' is a Romano-type bean that grows eighteen to twenty inches tall and produces flattened pods that are five to seven inches in length. The green pods can be harvested as any string bean and steamed or boiled. The younger that they are harvested, the less of a string you will contend with.

The seeds are brown and of a good size so optionally, you can allow the pods to remain on the plants and harvest and use them as a dry bean; they make a nice soup.

Originally bred and introduced by Dr. Alan "Mushroom" Kapuler of Peace seeds. We obtained our original seed sample from him in 2002. Each packet contains one ounce, which is approximately 80 seeds.

Planting Instructions:
Beans prefer well-drained, rich soil in a sunny location. Make sure you keep them well watered in the summer heat.

Beans are a tender vegetable and you should not plant them until all danger of frost has passed and the soil remains above 65ºF. Sow seeds 1-1½ inches deep, every two to three inches. Bush-type beans do not require support.

For seed saving, allow pods to remain on the plant until they are brittle and open easily. However, if you live in an area with a short growing season, harvest as close to dry as possible and finish drying indoors. Rain and freezing temps will damage beans.
