Ferris Wheel Tomato

Solanum lycopersicum

Price: $3.95

SKU: 3401091

90 days, indeterminate - 'Ferris Wheel' vines grow six feet or taller in height, are a regular leaf type that are somewhat wispy, which common in other large, pink, beefsteak-type varieties. Although none of the fruit we have grown out are true "monsters" that its originator exclaimed, we have harvested fruit weighing in at thirty-two ounces. Some of the later season fruit ripen as small as eight ounces here on our farm, but sixteen to twenty-four ounces seem to be typical specimen weight. The flavor definitely makes this variety one worth growing and preserving for future generations. They are juicy, deliciously complex yet mild, and slightly sweet.

'Ferris Wheel' is an old commercial heirloom variety that was once very popular, but nearly disappeared from availability until it was rediscovered in the 1990s by author and tomato authority Craig LeHoullier. Released by the John A. Salzer Seed Company of La Crosse, Wisconsin in 1894, you can read their amazing claims in the scan of their description included in the photo link above. Our parent stock originated from USDA accession number NSL 27341.
Fruit Color: Pink
Fruit Color: Purple
Special Groups: Ark of Taste
Special Groups: "Epic" Tomatoes
Harvest Timing: Late Season
Sow seeds indoors (do not direct sow into the garden), using sterile seed starting mix, 6 to 8 weeks before your last expected frost date. Plant 1/4" deep, water lightly but keep moist until emergence.

Full light and cooler temps (60° to 70°) will help to prevent the seedlings from becoming too leggy. If plants become rootbound before you can safely set them into the ground, transplant them into larger pots.

Harden off plants before planting outside. Young plants are very susceptible to frost and sunburn damage. Avoid too much nitrogen. Water evenly but not in excess.

I found out about this wonder in Craig LeHoullier's fantastic book, Epic Tomatoes. It was a little late when I ordered my seeds, but I started a few plants anyway and crossed my fingers. So far, I've had one superb tasting, one pound fruit.

The plant is very productive, currently with over two dozen fruits and still setting, double the production of my 'Brandywine' and 'Stump of the World' and the taste is comparable! It's also earlier, which is a big plus given our short growing season here.

The full-bodied flavor is a wonderful combination of balanced sweetness and old-fashioned, rich, tomatoey goodness with complex overtones. The texture is perfection!

Placed on my permanent grow out list!
