Matures approximately 290 days from fall planting. Duganski Hardneck Garlic is a mid-season, purple striped variety originally from Uzbekistan. It produces medium sized, attractive bulbs with purple outer wrappers that protect violet-tinged cloves. Each bulb typically yields 6-12 cloves, with an average of 8-9 per head.
The flavor starts out bold and fiery, then mellows into a rich garlic aftertaste. It is often used in spicy dishes, soups, sauces, and even fire cider. When roasted, Duganski develops a sweet, nutty taste that is savory without being overpowering.
Like other hardneck types, Duganski is winter hardy and does best when planted in the fall. In early summer, it produces curly scapes that add a mild garlic flavor to recipes and can also be used in floral arrangements.
This variety stores well, up to 5-7 months, often lasting into late spring. Duganski grows well across many climates, growing best in cooler regions but also thriving in southern states.
Duganski has even won a Champion Trophy at the Royal Fine Food Awards in Australia.
