Also referred to as "Annual Phlox," Phlox drummondii is a native to Texas but found growing all over the southeastern United States. Next time you are on a road trip in the spring and early summer, keep an eye out for it along the highways.
Phlox drummondii is an annual and if the conditions are right, will self-sow from seed each year. The branches have sharp, pointed, lengthy, leaves with flowers that are rounded, lightly scented, flat, in colors ranging from white and cream to shades of pink, lilac, rose, purple and red. It tolerates cool weather well, requires watering and does not like drought, wind or high heat.
It was named after Scottish botanist Thomas Drummond who discovered and sent samples back to England while on an expedition to Texas from 1833 to 1835. He died shortly before returning home. Each packet contains one gram, which is approximately 400 to 450 seeds.
