It grows large, puckered blue-green leaves with bold purple-pink midribs, and the color deepens as the weather cools in fall. Plants are upright and vigorous, reaching about 24 to 34 inches tall, and they grow faster than most lacinato types.
Its main feature is cold hardiness. It handles freezing temperatures better than other lacinato kales, and cool weather brings out more purple tones in the leaves. Expect some natural variation in leaf shape and color depth from plant to plant.
The flavor is the classic lacinato taste, tender and good for fresh eating. Pick young leaves at around 30 days for baby greens, salads, and chips, or let plants mature in about 50 to 60 days for full-size leaves to cook, braise, blend into smoothies, or freeze for later. The leaf color and shape are a common reason market growers and chefs choose it.

Planting Instructions: Kale grows best in cool weather. When established, it will tolerate frost. Can be sown in garden as soon as danger of hard frost is passed.
Sow seeds ½ inches deep, one inch apart, in rows 24 inches apart. Cover with loose soil. Thin plants to about twelve inches. Avoid disease by not planting where other Brassica (cole crops) plants have grown in the past year or two.

Dazzling Blue was bred by Hank Keogh of Avoca Seed Farm in Oregon, in association with Wild Garden Seed. It came from back-crossing Rainbow Lacinato with an older lacinato parent. The variety is protected by the Open Source Seed Initiative (OSSI).
