Curry Tomato

90 days, indeterminate - 'Curry' has large, regular leaf vines and does require staking or some other form support to accommodate the weight of it abundance of foliage and large fruit. When we say large, we are talking about tomatoes weighing thirty-six to forty ounces each! And although those giant tomatoes are not uncommon, the average fruit weight is probably more in the sixteen to twenty ounce range. Regardless, they are a large, beefsteak-type fruit that are pink in color, delicious, and excellent for slicing.

'Curry' is an old family heirloom from West Virginia that was originally sent to us in 2005 by author and tomato authority Craig LeHoullier, who simply described it as, "an old Seed Savers Exchange variety." After doing some digging, we learned that it was introduced to gardeners by Jim DeWeese of Butler, Ohio (OH DE J) in the 1994 Seed Savers Exchange Yearbook. He described how he had obtained the tomato from Mr. Ester Melvin Curry of Warren, Ohio in 1986 after reading newspaper story^[1] about him in the Warren Tribune Chronicle.^[2] Ester was given the seed by his father, Lemon Elzie Curry,^[3] prior to moving to Ohio from West Virginia. It had been grown by the family for at least 100 years prior.
