Indeterminate - 78 days to maturity. Burpee's Big Boy Tomato is a slicing tomato that Burpee first bred and introduced in 1949. It has been one of the best-selling tomato varieties for home gardeners ever since. The fruits are large, smooth, and bright scarlet red with a slightly flattened, round shape. Most range from 10 to 16 oz, and many reach 1 lb or more.
Yields are heavy, and a single plant can produce around 100 tomatoes over a 10-week harvest. The tall vines need stakes or cages for support. Big Boy is heat tolerant and widely adaptable, and it can also be grown in hydroponic systems. These large red beefsteak-style tomatoes are a good for slicing, sandwiches, burgers, and salads.

Sow seeds indoors (do not direct sow into the garden), using sterile seed starting mix, 6 to 8 weeks before your last expected frost date. Plant 1/4" deep, water lightly but keep moist until emergence.
Full light and cooler temps (60° to 70°) will help to prevent the seedlings from becoming too leggy. If plants become rootbound before you can safely set them into the ground, transplant them into larger pots.
Harden off plants before planting outside. Young plants are very susceptible to frost and sunburn damage. Avoid too much nitrogen. Water evenly but not in excess.
