Burgess Mammoth Wonder Tomato
Price: $3.45
SKU: 3401981As its name alludes, it was bred and released by the old Burgess Seed and Plant Company of Galesburg, Michigan and was introduced in 1955. 'Burgess Mammoth Wonder' was developed the old fashioned way . . . through years of selective breeding; eight generations to be exact. Its pedigree is a cross between 'Marglobe', 'Bonny Best', and a unknown pink uniform-color variety. We grew our stock out from USDA ARS accession number PI 270261.

This tomato is vigorous from start to finish - great seedlings, transplant well, and bulk up early. While they are listed as indeterminate, they act somewhat determinate. Full size is a very lush three feet tall. Sturdy staking is a must! No disease problems in my garden. Fruit size is actually not that mammoth - about 3-4 inches across on average. While it is not an overly heavy producer, it was not a shy producer either. Not an early variety, but solidly in the middle of the season. The single drawback is that the fruit can drop easily from the stem when ripe (even when not over ripe). In our home, blinded taste test, this one won out of 7 varieties. Sweet, meaty, and very tomatoey. It is a great slicer, as it is very juicy without being drippy. We also canned it as a diced tomato and in salsa. A good, all-purpose tomato with excellent fresh eating and slicing properties.
