90 days — 'Brunswick' is a large drumhead-type cabbage variety. It is a cold hardy, highly adapted variety that is suitable for spring as well as fall/winter harvesting that stores quite well. Produces solid heads around 8-10" in diameter, weighing 6-10lb. Although its exact history is elusive, we know that 'Brunswick' is an old German kraut-variety. Here in the United States, it appears in the oldest seed catalogs that we have in our library, dating back to the early 1870s. Each packet contains 1 gram, which is approximately 150 seeds.
This cabbage was a real producer! Seeds germinated well and transplants were of average vigor and hardiness. We had an unusually warm summer (temps frequently in the 80's and 90's), but these cabbages seemed to handle it just fine! They did have adequate overhead watering, and were partially shaded from the late afternoon sun by the corn patch. The heads were enormous and very firm - most of them were 12-14 across! They were an attractive blue-green on the outside, and very light green inside. We had a little problem with splitting after a heavy fall rain, but most survived without deep cracks. In summary, a perfect cabbage for preserving, but perhaps a little too large for exclusively fresh use.
This cabbage has preformed very well this year for us. Amazing flavor and size is awe inspiring. thanks so much for such good seed. We started inside in our greenhouse and once up a few inches then harden off under a small hoop house and then transplanted. All starts survived and have grown or are growing into maturity very well.
